Join me, Zach, from the Politics Outlook doing a weekly round-up of sport. We will look at points tables, and just how sport has been this week.
Cricket
The IPL (Indian Premier League) continued this week, with a single match on every weekday, rounding up with some matches on Saturday. Currently, the Rajastan Royals are in a commanding lead, followed by a 4 way tie in second place. The Royals currently have 16 points, with the second place teams having only 10 points. I have no doubt that the tournament will start getting very tight and tense towards the final matches.
The County Championship in the UK, however, is in for a very tight rest of the tournament, with Sussex in the lead with 51 points after a convincing win against Gloucestershire at the beginning of this week. Northamptonshire in second place with 44 points, and Leicestershire in third with 43 points. All to play for!
Rugby
England Rugby Women’s team have won the Women’s Six Nations today with a Grand Slam, meaning that they went unbeaten throughout the whole tournament. They won convincingly with 28 points and a 9 point lead over France in second place (19 points). Ireland came in third place with 10 points. England dominated this one, but I’m sure we’ll see many more competitive Six Nations to come.
The Gallagher Premiership is in the hands of the Northampton Saints in first place with 55 points, followed by the Saracens in second with 51 points, and Bath in third with 50 points.
Formula 1
The big news around Formula 1 this week has been the news of Nico Hulkenburg moving from Haas F1 team to Stake F1 team. The 36 year-old German driver still holds the record for most race starts without a podium in Formula 1. I’m sure that he will want to get his first podium at his new team when it becomes Audi in 2026.
In other Formula 1 news, Adrian Newey is set to leave Red Bull at the end of the 2024 season, due to the allegations of Christian Horner sending inappropriate messages to a female colleague. This news made every single Ferrari fan, Charles Leclerc fan, and Lewis Hamilton fan very excited, as there are talks of Newey going to Ferrari next year. The reason behind the excitement is that Newey has been given the credit for Red Bull’s dominance. This is because the aerodynamicist has created the most dominant car in F1 history: the RB19 (the car that took Max Verstappen to win 21 races out of 24 in a single season).
The Premier League Points Table
Arsenal are still in the lead of the Premier League before Sunday this week with 77 points, with a narrow lead of 1 point over Manchester City in second place with 76 points. Closely in it also are Liverpool, who are only 1 point behind Manchester City at 75 points.
Matches tomorrow:
AFC Bournemouth VS Brighton & Hove Albion (14:00)
Tottenham Hotspur VS Arsenal (14:00)
Nottingham Forest VS Manchester City (16:30)
Tennis
The Madrid Open started this week with big anticipation from the King of Clay (Rafa Nadal) who breezed past Australian Alex De Minaur. Nadal won in straight sets 7-6 (8-6) (6-3). I imagine this win was quite satisfying for Nadal, considering he was knocked out by the Australian only 10 days earlier at the Barcelona Open.
Carlos Alcaraz is defending his Madrid open Title, and started a couple days ago with a quick win verses Alexander Shevchenko. After Alcaraz’s forearm injury last week at the Barcelona Open causing him to withdraw, he was very quick with coming back to play Madrid, stating that his arm didn’t feel 100% on his forehands. Hopefully, we can see him recover throughout the tournament and he can get a win.
That’s it for the sport round up this week, thank you so much for taking the time to read!
