US Republican Leader of the Senate to step down in November
Mitch McConnell is the longest-serving US Senate leader in history. He announced on the 28th of February that he would be stepping down as Senate leader of the GOP (Republican Party).
“To serve Kentucky and the Senate has been the honor of my life, to lead my Republican colleagues has been the highest privilege. But one of life’s most underappreciated talents is to know when to move on to life’s next chapter.”
Mitch McConnell
Mitch McConnell joined the Senate in 1985 as a Senator representing Kentucky. He became Republican leader of the Senate in November 2006 when the Republicans had a minority control over it. After 17 years of Senate leadership, he has aged significantly, both mentally and physically. McConnell is 82 years old and has faced his mental failures on camera. Not only was this embarrassing but a bad image for the Republican party when criticising Biden’s old age, who has had significantly more gaffes.

NATO swiftly rejects Macron’s idea for Western troops in Ukraine
Earlier this week President Macron of France discussed, for “strategic” reasons, the idea of sending NATO troops to directly fight alongside the Ukrainians, against the Russians. Macron proposing this idea sent NATO Secretary General Jenn Stoltenberg to reject the idea. NATO alliance countries like the United States, Italy, Germany, Britain, Spain, Czech Republic, and Poland all quickly distanced themselves from the idea. This comes as Russia is making gains along the entire front line, notably with Avdiivka, where a lack of renewed Western support meant Ukrainian forces had to flee the city.

93 MPs have no confidence in Lindsay Hoyle
93 MPs back early no-confidence vote for Speak of the House Lindsay Hoyle to resign
Last week Lindsay Hoyle allowed a vote on the Labour Party’s amendment to the SNP’s motion for an “immediate ceasefire in Gaza”. As a result, nobody could vote on the original intended motion by the SNP. Despite this vote, it is unlikely a Parliament motion would have any profound effect on the war in Gaza as Israel has significant stockpiles of weapons. Any withdrawn support would have long-term consequences for Britain’s influence in the Middle East and Anglo-Israeli Relations.
