Weekly Politics Summary – 5/4/24: Israeli Drone strikes

Israeli Drone Strike on Food Charity

On April 1st, three World Central Kitchen cars were destroyed in a drone strike. The drone strike killed seven people, of which three were British. The IDF claimed responsibility for the drone strike and fired two senior Israeli Military Officers. The IDF started an investigation into the authorisation of this strike. World Central Kitchen shared its route with the IDF, making this drone strike even more unexpected.

On April 4th, Joe Biden called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and told him that continued American support for Israel depended on more aid being allowed in Gaza and more protection for aid workers.

Additionally, American-Israeli relations have soured due to more demands for safety guarantees for people in Gaza and Democrat criticism of Israel’s handling of the war against Hamas. Consequently, this puts Joe Biden under pressure to stop selling weapons to Israel.

Iranian General Killed in Drone Strike

Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), died in the strike. Zahedi was a significant figure in the Quds Force, which is the overseas division of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Furthermore, Zahedi is one of the most senior Iranian officials to be assassinated in recent times. This event reminds us of the assassination of Qasem Soleimani, who led the Quds Force. A drone strike killed him in January 2020, near Baghdad International Airport.

Blinken at NATO meeting

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken visits Belgium to celebrate NATO’s 75th Anniversary with diplomats and discuss Ukraine and Gaza.

Blinken said “Ukraine will join NATO. Our purpose of the summit is to help build a bridge to that membership and to create a clear pathway for Ukraine moving forward”

Blinken asks for Congress to continue aid for Ukraine. Congress has not yet approved the $60 Billion package. As a result, Ukraine has severe shortages of weapons.

Furthermore, guaranteeing that “Ukraine will join NATO” would bring NATO into a direct war with Russia. This would undoubtedly kill many Western soldiers, even though NATO can still avoid this.
