Weekly Politics Summary – 11/5/24: Indian Opposition

New SNP leader and First Minister of Scotland

On Monday, the 6th of May, the Scottish National Party elected a new leader, John Swinney, after the previous leader Humza Yousaf resigned. John Swinney’s job is to unify the SNP and solve all the economic issues currently damaging Scotland.

Currently, the Scottish economy has generally flatlined in growth. Despite this, it seems Rishi Sunak’s policies have nudged all four nations’ economies into growth. The next Scottish Parliamentary Election is in 2026, providing enough time for Swinney to slightly improve the economy.

“I have selected a Cabinet team that blends experience and energy, with a strong focus on the priorities my government will pursue. Eradicating child poverty, driving economic growth, meeting climate obligations, and investing in our vital public service.”

Russia Celebrates Victory Day

On Thursday the 6th of May, Russia celebrated Victory Day with a clear and profound display of strength against the West. Victory Day is a public holiday in Russia and other Post-Soviet Countries, commemorating and celebrating the Nazi surrender of Germany to the Soviets.

Every year parades take place across the country, most notably in Moscows’ Red Square. This year captured NATO equipment like the German Leopard 2 and American M1A1 Abrams tanks were displayed in Victory Square. Many Russian allied countries came to attend the parade, with most leaders from post-Soviet Countries.

“We know what the exorbitance of such ambitions leads to. Russia will do everything to prevent a global clash. But at the same time, we will not allow anyone to threaten us. Our strategic forces are always in a state of combat readiness.”

Russia has been advancing along the entire front line, capitalising on US weapons deliveries not yet arriving. Russia has held the advantage for the summer offensive, is it now too late for Ukraine?

Indian opposition candidate released

One of Narendra Modi’s opposition candidates has been granted temporary bail by India’s top court. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party and was arrested for allegedly taking part in a Delhi Liquor scam. He was arrested on 24th March 2024, which many in his party have called a politically motivated arrest by the BJP (India’s Governing Party).

He is out on bail until June 1st, when India’s National Vote ends. More than half the seats in Parliament have already been voted upon. Arvind Kejriwal’s opposition party is part of a larger opposition coalition called I.N.D.I.A. (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance).

It is expected that Narendra Modi (Prime Minister of India) will win a third term as President. Aam Aadmi Party is the governing party in the state of Punjab and the Union Territory of Delhi. AAP is a left-wing party in India.
