Who was the Military Official of Iran?
Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had died in the strike. The IRGC is a Military organisation of Iran. Israeli Forces had targeted the Iranian Consulate in Damascus and killed Brigadier General Zahedi.
Zahedi was a significant figure in the Quds Force, the overseas division of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Zahedi and the Quds Force work with terrorist political parties, like Hezbollah, Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Yemeni Houthis, and Shia militants. Iran has been the primary supporter of these groups and the proxy wars they are involved in.
The Israeli Airstrike on the Iranian Consulate killed 12 people including Brigadier General Zahedi. He had joined the IRGC in 1980. One year after its founding. He served as commander of their operations in Syria and Lebanon from 2008 to 2016. This was during the peak of the Syrian Civil War.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated that Israel would “regret this crime”. Khamenei has been the leader of Iran since 1989 and is the longest serving head of state in the Middle East.
Why is the strike significant?
Zahedi is one of the most senior Iranian officials to be assassinated in recent times. Qasem Soleimani was the leader of the Quds Force and assassinated by a U.S. drone strike in January 2020.
Quds Force has a wide impact on Middle Eastern politics, especially the levant region. As a result Israel and the U.S. have always been attempting attacks on the Quds Force, due to their proximity and their military assets in the region.
