Tesla To Scout Locations
In late April, Tesla plans to send its first team to scout potential locations for building electric car plants in India. This is estimated to cost USD 2-3 billion. Tesla will be focusing on Indian states which are already dominant auto manufacturing regions.
These regions include Gujarat and Rajasthan in the West and Tamil Nadu in the South. These states have ports and could be vital for exporting manufactured EVs.
Why Now?
This decision came after India made tariff cuts on EVs imported by companies willing to manufacture in India. This was a key condition for Musk for Tesla to invest in India. Modi had been after Musk for many months for Tesla to invest. He urged him more than ever before when he last visited the US.
The success of this operation may be incredibly beneficial for the BJP party and Modi directly preceding India’s general election. The key focus may be on profit earned and new jobs created due to the electric car plants due to Modi’s decision.
What are Tesla’s Benefits?
Tesla wishes to export manufactured cars all over South Asia and Africa via India. They hope to reach 500,000 cars annually manufactured at full capacity, planning to mimic Tesla’s ‘giga-factories’ in other areas, such as California or Berlin.
India hopes to improve their position against their geopolitical rival China, which is currently far ahead in exporting.
Tesla wants to manufacture a smaller, cheaper Tesla model priced at less than $30,000 to sell to Asian and African countries. The model name isn’t confirmed, but Tesla lovers dub it ‘Model 2’, according to The Print.
