MP Defects From Conservatives
Former health minister and ex-conservative MP Daniel Poulter has moved to the Labour party. This comes after his open resentment towards the appalling management of the NHS by the Conservatives. He thinks that defecting to Labour will help him focus more thoroughly on improving conditions in the NHS. This was his main goal to start with when he became an MP in 2010. His constituency is Central Suffolk and North Ipswich.
The last person to make this switch under Sir Kier Starmer’s leadership was Christian Wakeford in 2022.
Months of Discussion Beforehand
The switch was first revealed in an interview with The Observer. This may have been surprising news for Poulter’s 23,321 majority during the last general election. According to the Guardian, however, talks were going on months before the decision’s public announcement between Poulter and Senior Labour MPs, including Sir Kier Starmer.
They discussed the best times to publicly announce the shift, as well as inside information that Poulter had, to better improve Labour health policies.
Although the switch was kept secretive for a while, Poulter often voiced his frustrations towards other Tory MPs. Their lack of proactiveness or interest regarding his ideas for NHS reform angered him.
The conservatives may have missed their chance- now the fruitful ideas and policies Poulter had in mind will be given to Labour, possibly strengthening their already great prospects in the upcoming general election.
Sir Kier Starmer posts a welcome note for Daniel Poulter on X. He congratulates him on his efforts to stop the ‘conservative chaos’ and reform the NHS.
Reasons Behind Poulter’s Decision
Poulter has had first-hand experiences of the disorder in the NHS, being a part-time GP himself. He says in The Observer interview, “The chaos of today’s fragmented patchwork of community addiction services – making A&E the default location for people to get treatment and help – has added pressure to an already overstretched service”.
“I found it increasingly difficult to look my NHS colleagues in the eye, my patients in the eye, and my constituents in the eye with good conscience.”
The MP talked of over 20 separate experiences in severely overloaded and overstretched A&E departments.
First-hand experiences of such bad management and overstretched but underpaid employees changed his life. He now wants to focus all his efforts and resources as an MP to improve NHS conditions.
The former health minister believes that Labour will enable him to do this more than the ‘increasingly nationalist’ Torys, as he calls them. He feels that an organization moving further and further right, shifting away from the social needs of the public, is not where he wants to stand.
More than the lack of appreciation and interest in these issues, Poulter believes that conservatives shouldn’t be trusted with handling them. He makes a direct reference to the Liz Truss fiasco. He complains that her failure directly impacted his constituents. Poulter considers himself a ‘middle-ground voter’, and this was ‘shattering’ for him.
