The Chinese Grand Prix 2024

The Chinese Grand Prix 2024 was last sunday, after a 5 year break. For context, Lewis Hamilton had 5 world championships, Kimi Räikkönen was still at Ferrari, Max Verstappen only had 3 wins, and we had never heard of Covid-19. Now, Lewis has 7 world championships, Kimi has retired after racing for Alfa Romeo (now Stake F1 team), Max has won 50% of the races since then, and we all know what happened with Covid…

Chinese Grand Prix 2024 Results?

Well, as usual, depressing for me, a Mercedes fan. Verstappen got his 58th win, Lando Norris got another 2nd place (although still hasn’t got a win), and Sergio Pérez achieved his 39th podium.

Checo’s run at Red Bull:

Disappointing for many of us non Red Bull fans, but I think we’re all happy with the way Sergio Pérez has performed this season so far given his performance in the last season. Has he secured his place at Red Bull? Hard to tell at this point, but the way that Liam Lawson performed last season at Scuderia Alphatauri suggests that Checo’s career might be coming to an end.

sergio Perez talking to max verstappen

He is a mighty driver, don’t get me wrong, I just think that Helmut Marko would like to build a new block within the team. I have no doubt that Checo Pérez will continue racing whether in other motorsport categories or if he finds another seat for 2025, but I think his time at Red Bull is ending. However, that’s just my opinion. As I said before, it will be hard to tell until Silly Season.

Further down the field?

Well, the big controversy was between Daniel Ricciardo and the infamous Lance Stroll. The story goes like this: on a safety car restart, Daniel brakes into turn 14, and Lance Stroll goes straight into the back of him, forcing Daniel to retire from the race. Picture is shown below:

After the race, Daniel was asked about this crash with the reporter saying that Stroll blamed him for the crash. Ricciardo responded to this saying, ‘He’s saying my mistake? Ok, I had started to calm down but now that makes me… that pisses me off.’ He continues to elaborate saying that if you watch Stroll’s onboard, you can see that he is looking at the apex, and not at him.

It was a disappointing races, but I hope that we are going to see some more competition in the coming races.

The question we need to be asking now is whether it is too late for anyone to challenge Red Bull this season?
